A piracy that is more and more organized
Even if piracy is nothing new, its more modern version is also the most dangerous. Equipped with the latest technology (listening devices for radio frequencies, camouflage gear, weapons…). Pirates leave nothing to chance and target their victims. According to the figures issued by the International Maritime Office, there have been 141 attacks in South East Asia and 51 in West Africa.
Every area of activity is concerned
Yachts, leasure boats, fishing boats… no one is safe. Nevertheless it’s important to note that bulk carriers and chemical tankers are more targeted.
Even if these figures show a decrease in piracy acts, the cost remains high. Indeed, the IMO considers that the cost of stolen merchandizes in the Gulf of Guinea, to be between 34 and 101 million dollars.
Between 2005 and 2012, ransoms brought more than 330 million dollars to pirates in the horn of Africa. In addition, insurance companies have increased their fees.
